Why I Stopped Stressing About Holiday Weight Loss (And What I Do Instead)
Listen, I get it. Last Christmas, I found myself hiding in my aunt's bathroom, googling how many calories were in her famous pecan pie while my family wondered where I'd disappeared to. Not my proudest moment, tbh. 😅
That's when I realized - we've got this whole holiday weight thing ALL wrong.
The Holiday Diet Trap
Y'all, can we talk about how WILD it is that we're expected to maintain perfect eating habits during literally the most food-centric time of the year? Like, who made these rules??
I used to be that person who'd try to calculate the macros of stuffing while everyone else was enjoying their meal. Spoiler alert: it didn't work out great for me (or my mental health).
Why I Changed My Approach
Here's the thing - after years of yo-yo dieting and holiday anxiety, I've discovered something pretty revolutionary: it's not about choosing between "being good" and "letting go completely." There's this magical middle ground that nobody talks about!
My "Joy-First" Strategy
So here's what I do now (and what I tell my clients):
- I eat the damn cookie 🍪
- If it's my grandma's once-a-year special recipe? You bet I'm having some!
- But I actually TASTE it instead of inhaling it while feeling guilty
- I play the long game
- One month of holiday eating won't destroy years of healthy habits
- Focus on feeling good, not being "perfect"
- I've created my own rules
- Regular meals stay healthy-ish
- Holiday events get their own special category
- No food math allowed at family gatherings!
Real Talk: Practical Tips That Actually Work
Here's what's actually helped me (and doesn't make me want to cry into my protein shake):
Before Events:
- Eat something with protein (hungry Sarah makes terrible decisions)
- Wear clothes that feel good (no uncomfortable "goal" outfits!)
- Have a buddy who gets it
During Celebrations:
- Focus on conversations, not just food
- Take pictures (can't eat while being the unofficial family photographer 😉)
- Stay hydrated (wine counts... kinda?)
The Mental Game
Can we talk about anxiety for a sec? Because that's the real beast here. I've learned that stress about holiday eating often does more damage than the actual eating.
Some real questions to ask yourself:
- Will you remember the calories in that pie in 5 years?
- Or will you remember laughing with your family?
- What feels more important: perfect macros or perfect memories?
My Challenge to You
This holiday season, I dare you to try something different. Instead of making it about weight loss or gain, make it about balance and joy.
Create your own rules. Trust your body. And maybe, just maybe, stay out of the bathroom calculating calories (learn from my mistakes, people! 😂).
Remember: January you will be fine. The gym will still be there. Your healthy habits aren't going anywhere.
But these moments with loved ones? The joy of sharing traditional foods? That's the stuff life is made of.
